- What is an IP address?
- An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the numeric identifier your provider assigns to your connection so you can send and receive data on the Internet. It works like the postal address of your device on the network: the websites you visit use it to send the information you request back to you.
- What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
- IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (for example 192.0.2.1) and allows about 4.3 billion addresses, which have run out. IPv6 uses 128 bits (for example 2001:db8::1), offers a virtually unlimited number of addresses and is the standard the Internet is migrating to. Many modern connections have both at the same time.
- Is my IP address public or private?
- The IP you see on verip.es is your public IP: the one your router presents to the Internet and the one the websites you visit can see. Your private IP (for example 192.168.1.x) only identifies your device inside your local network and is not visible from outside.
- Can someone identify me from my IP address?
- An IP address does not reveal your name or your exact home address. It allows estimating your ISP and an approximate location (city or region). Only your Internet provider can link an IP to a specific customer, and usually only with a court order.
- Is IP geolocation accurate?
- No. IP geolocation is approximate: it usually gets the country right and often the region or city, but it is not your exact GPS position. It depends on provider databases and can be off by tens of kilometres, especially on mobile networks or when using a VPN.
- How can I hide or change my IP address?
- You can change your public IP by restarting your router (if your provider uses a dynamic IP), using a VPN or the Tor network, or connecting through a different network. A VPN replaces your IP with the one of its server and encrypts your traffic, making you harder to track.
